The Armed Forces and The Reserve Forces & Cadets Association
Historically the Lord-Lieutenant has always had strong links with the military units within Suffolk.. In particular, the Lieutenancy supports and promotes all the Reserve Forces and also liaises closely with our local Cadet Units linked to each of the Services.
Suffolk has many military bases including RAF Honington, Wattisham Air Station, Rock Barracks, RAF Mildenhall and Lakenheath.
The Reserve Forces are a vital component of the United Kingdom’s defence capability, providing some 50,000 men and women to the Reserves of the Royal Navy, Royal Marines, Army and RAF.
The RFCA is responsible for the wellbeing of the region’s Reserve Forces and Cadets, promoting the interests of the Armed Forces and building relationships with the local community and employers.
Established in 1860, the UK cadet movement is one of the oldest and most successful voluntary youth organisations in the world and celebrated its 150th anniversary in 2010. The Sea Cadet Corps (SCC), Army Cadet Force (ACF), Air Training Corps (ATC) and the Combined Cadet Force (CCF) allow young people to develop skills and qualities needed to become active and responsible members of their local communities
Lord-Lieutenant’s Cadets
Each year, the Lord-Lieutenant appoints three cadets. The Lord-Lieutenant’s Cadets are selected from young people in the Sea Cadet Corps, Army Cadet Force and the Air Training in Suffolk. They will have completed their training programmes and made a significant contribution to the life of their community. They are invited to assist the Lord-Lieutenant on Parades, Royal Visits, military and civic events and religious services, and thus gain an insight into the opportunities for public service as adults.
