Next Lord-Lieutenant of Suffolk Announced

18th December 2025
Mark Pendlington DL is presented to HM The King during Their Majesties visit to Newmarket in July 2025
Mark Pendlington DL is presented to HM The King during Their Majesties visit to Newmarket in July 2025

It was announced by 10 Downing Street on 16 December that His Majesty The King has appointed Mark Pendlington, DL to be the next Lord-Lieutenant of Suffolk, succeeding Clare, Countess of Euston, CVO, who will retire on 15th April 2026 after distinguished service to the county.

Mark Pendlington brings a wealth of experience from across the public and private sectors, including leadership roles in industry, voluntary organisations, education, and economic development. He has championed initiatives to boost enterprise, create opportunities for young people, improve skills, support communities, and encourage volunteering. As High Sheriff of Suffolk in 2023/24 and Chair of the Festival of Suffolk in 2022, Mark played a pivotal role in bringing together communities to celebrate the late Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

Mark’s commitment to Suffolk is reflected in his service as Pro-Chancellor of the University of Suffolk, Patron of Bury Drop-In, Chair of the Suffolk Business Board, Senior Non-Executive member of St Edmundsbury Cathedral Chapter, and Chair of Cefas, the government’s marine science and research body. He has also held roles as Chair of Business in the Community (Eastern Region), Trustee of the British Racing School, Trustee of Gainsborough’s House, and Chair of the New Anglia Enterprise Partnership. Mark is a Fellow of the Royal Countryside Fund and lives near Sudbury with his partner, Richard.

Statement from Clare, Countess of Euston, CVO

“I am absolutely delighted that His Majesty The King has appointed Mark Pendlington to be the next Lord Lieutenant of the County of Suffolk.

Mark is an exceptional individual, who throughout a long career in Business and Education, has worked tirelessly to improve the lives of those who live in Suffolk and the wider Eastern Region.  He has championed the cause of vulnerable groups of people, particularly the young, and his compassionate contribution to the work of charities and voluntary groups was highlighted during his year as High Sheriff.

I cannot think of anyone better suited for the role and I wish him every success.”

Statement from Mark Pendlington, DL

“I am deeply honoured to be appointed to serve His Majesty The King, and the opportunity it offers to recognise and support the work of so many communities, individuals and organisations that make Suffolk such a wonderful county.

It is a very special privilege to succeed Clare, Countess of Euston CVO, who has given such outstanding service to the late Queen, The King and to Suffolk. Her constant presence has both reassured and inspired us during many momentous moments in the life of our county and country. We all felt such gratitude and delight that her exemplary service was honoured by The King in the Birthday Honours this year.”
