HRH The Duke of Gloucester KG GCVO visits Suffolk

His Royal Highness The Duke of Gloucester had a full day of visits in Suffolk on Tuesday 14 September. During his visit HRH officially opened The Hold, Suffolk’s new Archives Centre. He also visited the University of Suffolk where, as The Grand Prior of the Order of St John, he accepted the new Suffolk ambulance, donated by The Alborada Trust, on behalf of St John. This was followed by a viewing of some of the University’s Architecture Students work and presenting The Outstanding Architecture Student of the Year Award. HRH’s visit concluded with a visit to Sutton Hoo to see the new developments and officially open the Viewing Tower.

The Suffolk Lieutenancy

The post of Lord-Lieutenant is now an honorary appointment. The origin dates back to Henry VIII when its holder was made responsible for the maintenance of order and for the military measures necessary locally for defence. Go to our History page to find out more information about the role.
